Thank you Nama but not quite

The National Arts Merit Awards (Nama) ceremony held recently has raised issues just like any other event of it’s magnitude.

There have been different narratives from various analysts, reporters and artistes alike.Below are views from one artiste Melusi Khumalo:

Nama awards have come and gone and I had an opportunity to attend this ‘glamorous’ occasion held at 7 Arts Theatre in Avondale; a venue that was used as an excuse for not accommodating a multitude of artistes who would have benefited from just attending this annual event.

This is an event meant in all it purpose to encourage and appetise those working hard in arts fields to do better in future so they can be recognized as well.

There were a few glitches this time around compared to last year though I felt more work in terms of planning and out reaching to artistes and availing forms would have done better.

The net should be cast wider (even if we heard from one Ben Mahaka that all 10 provinces were covered).

If that were the case however, then we should have had a general agreement in all corners.

I personally feel invites must be reserved for dignitaries, nominees and presenters of awards while the whole event should be opened for those who want to attend rather than to treat artistes as if they are outcasts when in fact they are the ones making the day,

I witnessed artistes being turned away and my heart sank. This happened while people who have nothing to do with a arts got to enjoy the occasion.

I saw some finest brains sitting on the “ungraded” side of the auditorium who in my view should have been recognsed but not at all.

I thought it would have been in order to mention and recognise our pioneers and gurus in the arts industry, but no, nothing of that sort happened.

My point here being let’s recognise people who have and those still working hard in the industry something that a few other artistes happened to agree with.

Presenters were treated as “border jumpers” as security did not know who is who. I watched Tony Friday in particular from ZiFm being denied entry until the security were told who he was. While tight security would be noble for a good event, harrassing a master of Ceremonies of the very event defies logic. And that it did not happen once makes it all worrying.

Again some presenters lacked direction and grooming prior to these awards; the displays were not eye catching and lacked completeness.
