Zimbabwe’s entertainment and legal circles, the High Court has ordered the immediate suspension of The Mugabe DNA Show, ruling that its public paternity revelations constitute “a gross violation of personal privacy rights.”
Justice Joseph Mafusire, delivering the verdict, overturned his 2021 ruling that had allowed the show to continue. In a strongly worded judgment, he criticised the program for turning deeply personal family matters into a public spectacle.
“While the public may find entertainment in the personal tragedies of others, the court cannot condone the televised humiliation of citizens, especially vulnerable women and children. DNA testing serves a scientific purpose – not as a spectacle for public consumption.”

The ruling follows a string of complaints from former participants who claimed they had been misled into appearing on the show, only to have their private lives laid bare before millions.
One woman, speaking anonymously, described the emotional toll of her experience:“They promised me help, but instead, they made me a laughingstock. My child’s father denied him on live TV. Now we get mocked in the streets.”
Legal experts say the ruling sets a powerful precedent for media ethics in Zimbabwe, reinforcing the right to privacy in an era where sensationalism often trumps human dignity.
