In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the lives of four young children were tragically cut short after they became trapped inside a parked car.
The devastating incident occurred in Hopley Zone 1, Harare, where two boys and two girls, aged between three and four, were discovered lifeless inside the vehicle.
Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the distressing news to ZimLive, revealing that the incident unfolded on Thursday evening.
Initial reports from the police suggest that the children, who were last seen playing in the vicinity, somehow gained access to the parked car unnoticed. Tragically, they inadvertently locked themselves inside, leading to a fatal outcome.

Investigators are exploring the possibility that the car may have been left unlocked, allowing the children to enter freely. Once inside, it’s believed that one of them unintentionally triggered the locking mechanism, sealing their fate. The sweltering afternoon temperatures, reaching 29°C, likely exacerbated the situation.
According to a neighbor, the children were last seen playing in the street around 1 PM. Concern grew when they failed to return home, prompting their parents to launch a frantic search effort, albeit unsuccessfully.
The grim discovery was made around 7 PM when a neighbor, Simbarashe Makaza, went to his Toyota Chase vehicle to retrieve a generator container. To his horror, he found the lifeless bodies of the four children piled up in the backseat, sending shockwaves through the community.
The deceased children have been transported to Parirenyatwa Hospital for a postmortem examination, as authorities continue their investigation at the scene. An official statement from the police is expected to provide further details as the investigation progresses.
