Two Additional Suspects Face Court in $720k Heist

Two additional suspected robbers allegedly involved in the heist targeting a financial services company, where they reportedly fled with a substantial amount of money, foreign currency, valuable items, and firearms, have made their appearance in court.

Identified as Obvious Chanakira (29) and Godknows Garira (28), the two individuals stood before Mr. Donald Ndirowei, facing charges of armed robbery.

Their case was amalgamated with that of seven other alleged accomplices who had been arraigned before the court the previous week. These seven individuals were identified as Washington Mangwanda (21), Brighton Chikuwa (27), Silence Matambo (27), Liberty Mukangaise (31), Richard Marondera (25), Luke Zinyengere (28), and Shadreck Tendai Mudanga (42), purportedly the mastermind behind the heist.

During the previous hearing, Mudanga had contested his placement on remand, arguing a lack of evidence linking him to the crime. However, Magistrate Ndirowei dismissed his application.

All accused persons have been remanded in custody until March 19 for further proceedings.

According to the State prosecutor, Mr. Lancelot Mutsokoti, the accused were captured on CCTV footage committing the robbery. However, only a fraction of the stolen money has been recovered thus far.

Two other suspects, Phillip Rwodzi (37) and Livingstone Tunha (53), have been released by the police in relation to the case.

The prosecution alleges that on February 25 around 1:30 am, the accused, armed with various weapons, including firearms and tools, arrived at the victim’s offices. They proceeded to break into the premises and rob the complainant, Lancelot Tashayawedu.

Tashayawedu was reportedly bound and left under guard while the accused ransacked the offices, seizing cash, laptops, and other valuables. The robbers purportedly used explosives to access secure areas.

Their plans were disrupted by the arrival of the Safe Guard reaction team, prompting their escape from the scene. Some stolen items were abandoned during their flight.

Investigations led to the arrest of the accused individuals and the recovery of stolen cash, as well as vehicles purchased with the stolen funds.

Moreover, evidence of communication among the accused before and during the robbery, including call records, has been cited by the prosecution.
