A heartfelt act of generosity by Sir Wicknell Chivayo took an unexpected turn, sparking online controversy and ridicule after a video from Victoria Falls Airport surfaced on social media.
The incident unfolded when a wealthy traveler, boarding a private jet back to Harare with his partner, distributed $100 cash gifts to airport staff in green reflective vests, appreciating their service during the holiday season.
However, confusion arose as non-airport staff joined the crowd.
From VICTIM to VICTORY…
My attention has been drawn to the UNFORTUNATE CRITICISM directed at the woman in the video circulating on social media, who did not receive USD100 like other airport staff during my recent visit to VICTORIA FALLS. In the video, a woman in a pink top and blue jeans was left out after mistakenly receiving attention but no cash. The moment, captured online, subjected her to public ridicule and derogatory remarks.
Addressing the backlash, the philanthropist extended a public apology to the woman and her family, acknowledging her actions as a natural response to a rare opportunity.
“I would have done the same in her shoes,” he admitted.
To make amends, he announced a $5000 goodwill payment for the woman, urging her to contact his lawyer, Sikhumbuzo Mpofu, to claim the amount.
He closed his statement with an uplifting message, encouraging resilience and wishing her a prosperous 2025.
What began as a gesture of gratitude now serves as a reminder of how generosity can lead to unintended consequences—and opportunities for redemption
