The Zimbabwe Kobudo team, comprising Master Wilfred Mashaya and his student Vincent Fambira, returned home to a grand reception after becoming the first African team to be crowned World Champions in Weaponry Martial Arts.

The duo arrived safely in Zimbabwe, greeted by a throng of supporters and well-wishers at the RGM International Airport, eager to honor their remarkable achievements.

The team’s outstanding performance on the global stage earned them a total of 11 medals, including 8 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze. The Zimbabwe Martial Arts Kobudo Team operates under the umbrella of the Zimbabwe Karate Union (ZKU).

The welcoming committee at the airport comprised esteemed guests such as high-ranking officials from the Zimbabwe Republic Police Command, members of the Zimbabwe Karate Union, martial artists from various organizations, bodybuilders, athletes from diverse sporting disciplines, the Zim Ninja Academy, media personnel, members of the police force, as well as family, friends, and relatives.

Notably, Master Mashaya’s mother traveled all the way from a rural area, Gokwe, covering nearly 400 km, to embrace her victorious son. Overwhelmed with joy, she was moved to tears, displaying the priceless love of a mother.

The presence of aspiring young champions among the welcoming team demonstrated the profound inspiration Master Mashaya’s accomplishments have had on them. The Zim Ninja has become their role model, motivating them to pursue martial arts. Various groups showcased their skills through captivating displays, filling the airport with an atmosphere of joy and happiness.

Master Mashaya and his student, Sempai Fambira, have not only placed Zimbabwe on the martial arts map but have also garnered praise from around the world. Their resounding victory in England during the ICO World Martial Arts Championships has captivated numerous countries, who have taken to social media to shower the two Zimbabwean heroes with compliments and admiration.

The championships, held from October 20 to October 22, took place at the Allam Sports Centre, located at the University of Hull in Hull City, England. The event was hosted and organized by Mr. Andrew Hennessy, representing the International Combat Organisation (ICO) based in England.

Over 15 countries and more than 500 athletes participated, including England, Wales, Ukraine, Germany, France, Lebanon, Hungary, Ireland, Scotland, Cyprus, Isle of Man, Portugal, Spain, Brazil, and, of course, Zimbabwe.

Master Mashaya secured 3 gold medals and 1 silver medal in the Black Belts Individual Weaponry Categories, while his student, Fambira, emulated his mentor’s success by claiming 3 gold medals and 1 silver medal in the plus 17 Years Individual Weaponry Categories.

As a team, they triumphed with 2 gold medals and 1 bronze medal in the Team Weaponry Categories.

Master Mashaya expressed his satisfaction with Fambira’s exceptional performance, viewing it as a testament to the growth of Kobudo Martial Arts, a discipline he introduced in Zimbabwe in 2016 following his triumph in Russia.

The categories they competed in included various weapons such as Katana Swords, Chuckle Sticks/Nunchaku, Tonfa, Kama, Sai, Bo, and more. The rarity of expertise in weapons or Kobudo in Africa makes the achievements of these talented Zimbabweans in a global championship all the more remarkable.

The team, comprising Master Mashaya and Sempai Fambira, pledged to continue making the nation proud and representing Zimbabwe on the international stage in Weaponry Martial Arts, provided they receive adequate sponsorship.

They attribute their success to the Almighty Lord, emphasizing the values of hard work, humility, respect for others, commitment, focus, and, above all, discipline—a driving force that enables them to soar to greater heights in the world of sports.
