Zengeza West (Ward 16) Councillor Fungayi Magadzire is pleading with the Chitungwiza residents to complement council effort by desisting from throwing away litter at illegal dumpsites.
The dormitory town experience artificial flooding every rainy season due to poor drainage caused by blockages created by litter.
“I want to urge the people of Chitungwiza to stop littering, it is affecting the flow of rain water in our drainage systems.
“Council is doing it’s best to clear the drainages, to prevent flash floods from occurring.
” So you should do your role by placing litter in the bins, to complement the good work council is doing”, explained Magadzire.
Council have been embarking on a drainage clearing exercise since last year, and in many new settlements construction of trenches is underway.

“I have noted with great concern that people need education on litter, you find out that food waste are placed in a bin, when they should be put in a garden as manure or in a hole.
“They are people who collect plastic bottles and bottle caps, so those should be put in a separate bin.
“Metal objects must be given to scrap dealers, who are always out there. If people follow that, you see that it will take three or four weeks to fill a standard bin to capacity”.
Collection of garbage has improved of late, after the purchase of refuse compactors under devolution funds.
