A 57-year-old woman Violet Moyo from Mathula Village in Tsholotsho District narrowly escaped death after bravely defending herself from a lion attack, managing to grab the animal by the throat before it retreated.

Despite suffering serious injuries, Violet Moyo’s quick thinking and strength were key to her survival. Currently recovering at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo, Moyo shared her terrifying experience with Sunday News from her hospital bed.

The attack left Moyo with deep cuts to her arms, face, and body. Every movement causes her significant pain. The incident occurred early Thursday morning as Moyo was heading to the fields to prepare for the upcoming cropping season. She recounted:

On Thursday morning, I bathed my six-year-old grandchild, whom I live with. We left the house around 6 AM—he went to school while I headed to the fields. He walked a little ahead of me, joining his schoolmates.

Suddenly, I heard a loud roar. As I turned around, I was immediately attacked by an animal from behind. I fell to the ground, and all my belongings scattered.

The lion attempted to grab my throat with its claws, but I managed to dodge it until it sank its claws into my left cheek.

In a moment of desperation, Moyo instinctively grabbed the animal’s throat and began choking it.

I reached out with my right hand and grabbed what felt like a pipe, holding it tightly until the lion stopped resisting. Once it lost the will to fight, I let go, and it walked away. At first, I screamed for help, hoping to draw attention. Some of the children walking with my grandchild heard the roar, but the attack happened so quickly that not all of them saw the animal. Neighbors also heard the roar, confirming it was a lion.

Moyo explained that lions and leopards have never been seen in their village before.

This is the first time we’ve encountered such an attack. We do occasionally see elephants, but I believe the ongoing drought and food shortages at Hwange National Park have driven the animals closer to our community, leading to more human-wildlife conflicts.

Tinashe Farawo, the public relations manager for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks), confirmed the attack and said authorities are actively tracking the lion to ensure the safety of the community. Farawo also clarified that, while some initially thought the animal was a leopard, the evidence and tracks at the scene confirmed it was indeed a lion.
