545 Zimbabweans Face Deportation as Trump Cracks Down

With a pressing urgency, it has been announced that at least 545 people from Zimbabwe are set to be deported from the United States as President Donald Trump’s government intensifies its crackdown on illegal immigrants.

In November, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) identified a staggering 1,445,549 non citizens for possible removal, including many Zimbabweans.

The new deportation efforts are happening now that Trump is back in office and is pushing tighter immigration rules as part of his ‘America First’ plans.

These large-scale raids, resulting in the detention of over 500 illegal migrants daily, have sparked deep concern among immigrant groups, particularly the Zimbabwean community.

Many of them, who fled economic hardships and political unrest in search of a better life, now face the threat of deportation.

Zimbabweans are listed with 379 South Africans, 174 Zambians, 15 Mozambicans, and 12 BaTswana on ICE’s non-detained file, which means they are waiting for final orders to be removed.

ICE explained its moves and asked foreign governments to take back their citizens.

“ICE aims to remove undocumented noncitizens from the U.S. promptly after they receive final orders for removal,” the agency stated.

The U.S. has warned that there will be consequences for countries that do not participate. This comes after Colombia recently refused to allow a U.S. plane with 201 deported people to land. The diplomatic conflict led Trump to promise sanctions until the issue was settled.

The U.S. Government thinks that every country should take back its people who cannot stay in the United States, according to ICE.

It also asked foreign countries to verify the citizenship of deportees, quickly provide travel documents, and accept planned deportation flights.

Countries that do not follow the rules could be called ‘uncooperative’ and might face trouble in their international relations, such as strained diplomatic ties or economic sanctions.

Zimbabweans in the U.S. on Edge

The U.S. Census Bureau reported that more than 80,000 Zimbabweans lived in America in 2021. Many of them came in hopes of finding better job prospects.

Many thousands have moved to Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand to escape the ongoing economic problems in Zimbabwe.

Undocumented Zimbabweans in the U.S. are living in a state of constant anxiety as the stricter raids have heightened their fear of imminent deportation.

While some may be eligible for asylum or other forms of assistance, the swift deportation actions by ICE, which involve immediate removal from the country upon receiving final orders, leave them with few options for court appeals.

The Zimbabwean government hasn’t responded officially yet, but the situation raises worries about the country’s ability to help returned citizens during tough economic times.

Trump’s administration is focussing heavily on immigration enforcement, leaving the future of many Zimbabweans unclear. Deportation flights occur, and foreign countries feel pressure to follow U.S. rules.
