Canada Leads Zimbabwe’s HeForShe Gender Equality Efforts

The handover of the HeForShe co-chairmanship to Canadian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Adler Aristilde, marked a pivotal moment in Zimbabwe’s ongoing fight against gender-based violence (GBV) and the broader push for gender equality.

Taking over from EU Ambassador Jobst von Kirchmann, Ambassador Aristilde assumes leadership at a critical time when stakeholders are intensifying efforts to eradicate GBV across the country.

The transition was formalized during the HeForShe Solidarity March in Harare, an event that united government officials, diplomats, civil society organizations, and citizens under a common cause.

The march, co-organized by the European Union (EU), UN Women, and the Ministry of Women Affairs, underscored the importance of sustained diplomatic and grassroots action against GBV.

In his acceptance speech, Ambassador Aristilde reaffirmed Canada’s longstanding dedication to gender equality, both globally and in Zimbabwe.

“Gender equality is not just a fundamental human right but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world. As I on the HeForShe leadership role, I remain committed to building on existing partnerships and driving transformative action,” he said.

Canada’s approach to gender equality is rooted in its Feminist International Assistance Policy, which prioritizes the empowerment of women and girls, the elimination of GBV, and increased female participation in leadership. Through this policy, Canada has supported numerous gender-focused programs in Zimbabwe, from funding women-led businesses to promoting legal reforms that strengthen protections for survivors of violence.

As he passed the baton, Ambassador von Kirchmann highlighted the EU’s achievements under its tenure, including increased financial support for GBV prevention programs and the launch of the HeForShe Group of Artists, an initiative that engages creatives in gender advocacy.

“The fight against gender-based violence does not end with today’s march. It requires continuous commitment from all sectors of society. Team Europe remains steadfast in its partnership with Zimbabwe, ensuring that gender equality remains at the forefront of development efforts,” he stated.

The EU has been one of the largest financial contributors to gender-focused initiatives in Zimbabwe, committing over USD 300 million between 2021 and 2027. The funding supports shelters for survivors, legal aid, and community-based awareness campaigns, among other interventions.

The transition in leadership comes as Zimbabwe prepares to present its review of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action at the upcoming United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Over the past three decades, the country has made notable progress in policy reforms, including the enactment of laws that address GBV and the establishment of one-stop centers for survivors.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa, emphasized the government’s commitment to eradicating GBV.

“The launch of the High-Level Political Compact on Ending Gender-Based Violence and Harmful Practices in 2021 was a clear demonstration of our dedication to this cause. Today, as we march together, we reaffirm that commitment and call on all Zimbabweans to play their part,” she said.

Under Canada’s chairmanship, the HeForShe movement in Zimbabwe is expected to expand its engagement with key sectors, including the private sector, youth organizations, and traditional leaders. The goal is to create a holistic approach that not only addresses GBV but also promotes women’s economic empowerment, political participation, and leadership.

Harare Deputy Mayor, Councillor Rosemary Muronda, in hee closing remarks, underscored the role of local authorities in ensuring public safety for women and girls. “Gender-based violence is not just a private issue—it is a societal problem. As a city, we are committed to ensuring safe spaces for all our residents,” she said.

With Canada now steering the HeForShe movement, stakeholders anticipate a reinvigorated approach to tackling GBV, leveraging diplomatic influence, funding, and grassroots activism to build a more inclusive and equitable Zimbabwe.
