The downgrade of Tropical Cyclone Chido to a mere depression has brought a sigh of relief to event organizers and artists in Zimbabwe. Concerns that heavy rainfall could disrupt festive activities and result in losses for promoters have eased, as the cyclone’s intensity has diminished significantly since its landfall on Monday.
According to the Meteorological Services Department (MSD), the cyclone caused moderate rainfall in some areas but weakened substantially as it moved further inland. This has been welcome news for those relying on outdoor and indoor events to attract crowds during the holiday season.
Event planners, particularly those hosting outdoor shows, had been on high alert due to the unpredictability of severe weather. Many opted for indoor venues as a precaution, ensuring that their events would proceed uninterrupted.
Prominent promoters like Partson “Chipaz” Chimbodza and Benjamin Nyandoro of Jive Zimbabwe expressed their confidence in moving forward with scheduled events. Unity Day will feature the Zimbabwe Cup Clash at the City Sports Centre in Harare, followed by another event at the Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex headlined by renowned musician Alick Macheso.
Chipaz reassured fans in an interview, saying, “Cyclones and rain are natural occurrences beyond our control. We have taken measures to ensure fans’ safety by choosing indoor venues. Additionally, we are monitoring weather updates closely and praying for favorable conditions.”
The Zimbabwe Cup Clash, a highlight of the festive calendar, will see a new champion crowned, with a car as the grand prize. The Chitungwiza event will feature a lineup including Holy Ten, Killer T, and Alick Macheso, ensuring diverse entertainment for attendees.
Adaptation and Safety Measures
Chau Nedi, known as “Boss Chau” and the organizer of events at Jongwe Corner in Harare and Chinhoyi, highlighted the importance of preparation. His venues are equipped with tents and additional shelter to protect attendees from the elements.
“This season, we are ensuring fans’ safety with proper precautions. From tents during rain to braziers in winter, we strive to provide a comfortable experience,” he explained. His packed schedule includes performances by artists like Cello Culture, Master H, Freeman, and Jah Prayzah.
Similarly, Dee Nosh of DTL Entertainment is ensuring adequate arrangements for his Kadoma Shut Down Gig on December 31. Featuring Tocky Vibes, Killer T, and Enzo Ishall, the event promises to draw significant crowds.
“Our fans are the backbone of our success, and their safety is paramount. Reports of Cyclone Chido’s weakening are encouraging, and we’ll have tents and other provisions in place to keep them safe,” Dee Nosh shared.
Other popular venues in Harare, such as Theatre in the Park and the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC), are set to host major events. Boxing Day performances by Mokoomba and Gwevedzi at Theatre in the Park and the ANOT 2024 gospel concert at HICC are among the highlights.
Alick Macheso, performing across various locations throughout the season, emphasized collaboration with venue owners to ensure smooth operations. “We are staying informed about the weather and taking all necessary measures to safeguard attendees,” said his publicist, Tichaona Makahamadze.
Peter Moyo, with a series of shows lined up through January 1, echoed similar sentiments: “We are prepared for any weather challenges and place our trust in God to protect everyone during this festive season.”
The weakening of Cyclone Chido has been a welcome development, allowing Zimbabweans to celebrate the holiday season with minimal disruption. With careful planning and continued monitoring, event organizers are ensuring that the festive spirit remains alive and vibrant.
