During a session in Zimbabwe’s National Assembly, Health Minister Douglas Mombeshora shared that Matabeleland South has the highest HIV rate in the country at 17.3% for 2023.
Matabeleland North follows closely at 14.5%. This is much higher than the national average of 9-11%. In comparison, Manicaland has the lowest rate at 9.4% and Masvingo at 9.6%.
Douglas Mombeshora acknowledged these differences between regions and stressed the importance of detailed reports from Provincial Medical Directors to understand the challenges each area faces. He mentioned that Zimbabwe currently provides ART treatment to about 1.2 million people and hopes to reduce new infections through improved treatment methods.

Regarding future funding, Mombeshora highlighted efforts to plan for sustainability beyond donations, including initiatives like the National AIDS Trust Fund. He noted significant progress in lowering HIV rates from nearly 30% in the past.
MP Discent Bajila raised concerns about Zimbabwe relying on imported contraceptives and condoms, asking about plans to produce them locally to avoid supply issues.
Mombeshora confirmed the country’s dependence on imports and expressed interest in boosting local production, inspired by successful models in Egypt. He emphasized the government’s commitment to providing free condoms to ensure accessibility, though he acknowledged challenges with distribution and misuse in the market.
