The 28th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide is being commemorated by the launch of a television channel that focuses on the tragedy and more importantly, the aftermath and the search for reconciliation in a country torn apart.
Liz Dziva, publicity and public relations manager of MultiChoice Zimbabwe, said the Kwibuka 28 channel would run on DStv or a week from this Thursday, April 7, and would provide inspiration to the whole of Africa, as the Rwanda post-genocide success story is relayed to audiences across the continent, including Zimbabwe.
Kwibuka means ‘remember’ and stems from the Rwandan policy of remember-unite-renew, a policy that has driven the country to its successful revival in the past two decades.
“The channel will run 24/7 from Thursday, April 7 to Wednesday, April 13 inclusive, and will feature a range of programming that tells the story of the horror years, as well as the years that have followed, the latter serving to inspire the world as evidence that bad can be followed by good,” said Ms. Dziva.
It is available to DStv Premium, Compact Plus, Compact, Family, and Access viewers and will be available on channel 197. It is aimed at general audiences but has a PG13 rating as it covers serious material on the genocide.
“This will be a channel that provides a heart-searching look at what happened to a country not far from us and shows, most important, how the terror and horror were followed by an unprecedented drive to achieve reconciliation,” said Ms. Dziva.
