Dynamos’ CAF Dreams Shattered in Dramatic Penalty Shootout

Dynamos have been knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup after a defeat to Botswana’s Orapa United at the Obed Itani Chilume Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Despite securing a 1-0 victory in the first leg last week at the same venue, Dynamos only needed a draw to progress to the group stage. However, a missed penalty and an unsuccessful penalty shootout dashed their hopes of advancing and securing the US$400,000 reward for reaching the next round.

The missed chance came in the 21st minute when Shadreck Nyahwa was brought down in the penalty area. Kevin Moyo took the resulting spot-kick, but his tame shot was comfortably saved by Orapa’s goalkeeper Lesenya Malepela.

The second half saw Orapa United apply pressure, leading to an unfortunate own goal from Dynamos captain Frank Makarati, which tied the match 1-1 and forced a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, only Temptation Chiwunga managed to score for Dynamos, while Valentine Kadonzvo, Eli Ilunga, and Nomore Chinyerere all missed their penalties. Dynamos eventually lost 3-1.

Following this exit from the tournament, Dynamos will now focus on the Chibuku Super Cup quarter-finals in an effort to restore some pride, with their hopes for the Premier Soccer League (PSL) title now diminished.
