Get to Know Prostate Cancer Symptoms, Treatments

Sir Chris Hoy

Six-time Olympic cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy has disclosed that he is battling advanced prostate cancer.

At 48 years old, Hoy shared that the disease has spread to his bones and is now terminal.

The news has sparked an outpouring of support, with charities emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about prostate cancer, which could potentially save lives.

Understanding Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer originates in the prostate gland, a walnut-sized organ located just below the bladder in the pelvis. This gland surrounds the urethra, the tube responsible for carrying urine out of the body.

The disease is characterized by abnormal and uncontrolled cell growth. While it often develops slowly and may not require treatment in some cases, aggressive forms of prostate cancer can spread rapidly and be fatal. Early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment.

Prevalence of Prostate Cancer
According to Prostate Cancer UK, one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. The disease is most common in men over the age of 75, with cases in younger men being relatively rare.

Risk factors include a family history of prostate cancer, being of Black ethnicity, and advancing age. Approximately 52,300 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer annually in the UK.

To help individuals assess their risk, Prostate Cancer UK offers a 30-second online risk checker. Those who believe they may be at higher risk are encouraged to consult their GP.

Recognizing Symptoms
Common symptoms of prostate cancer include:

  • Frequent urination, particularly at night
  • Difficulty starting or maintaining a urine stream, and weak flow
  • Blood in urine or semen

These symptoms may also be caused by other conditions, so it’s important to seek medical advice if any changes occur.

Diagnosis
Prostate cancer diagnosis typically involves a combination of tests, including:

  • A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test
  • Imaging scans
  • A biopsy to examine prostate tissue

PSA tests are not routinely used for screening healthy men due to their potential for false positives or negatives. However, men over 50 can request a PSA test from their GP, who will explain the associated risks and benefits. To ensure accurate results, patients are advised to avoid sexual activity and vigorous exercise, such as cycling, two days before the test.

Ongoing research is exploring ways to improve diagnostic accuracy, including the use of MRI scans alongside PSA testing.

Treatment Options
Treatment for prostate cancer depends on its stage and aggressiveness. For early-stage cancer, doctors may recommend monitoring the condition without immediate intervention.

Curative treatments include surgery and radiotherapy. Hormone therapy can also slow the progression of the disease, while techniques like cryotherapy and high-intensity focused ultrasound may help destroy cancer cells.
