Tensions flared in GoromonziNorth on Wednesday when ZANU PF members clashed at Lonely Park Farm, owned by Antony Retzlarf, following the discovery of gold deposits on the property.
A group of youths from Vhuta Ward 13, led by local party leaders, reportedly invaded the farm, demanding inclusion in the mining activities.
The youths accused Pardon Chibamu, ZANU PF’s provincial youth league secretary for education, of seizing control of the gold claim without consulting them, despite their role in identifying the deposits. Demonstrators sang protest songs, carried placards, and allegedly attacked Chibamu, damaging his Toyota Fortuner in the process.

The group sent a formal complaint to ZANU PF Mashonaland East provincial chairperson Daniel Garwe on December 10. The letter, signed by local leaders, including councillor Peter Million, alleged that Chibamu used his influence within the party to gain control of the mine. It read:
“The Vhuta community discovered a gold belt at Lonely Park Farm, but Pardon Chibamu misled Mr. Retzlarf and used his party connections to take over the site.”
Ceylon Gotora, the community secretary, confirmed the confrontation, stating that gunshots were fired at the scene and four villagers were arrested. “We submitted a letter to the province, but we are still awaiting a response,” Gotora added.
In his defense, Chibamu insisted that he legally owns the mine and dismissed accusations of misconduct. “I have all the necessary documentation to prove ownership,” he said. “Those causing trouble are not ZANU PF members. Mining is a process governed by proper paperwork, and we are following all legal procedures.”
The incident highlights growing disputes over mining rights in the region, often complicated by political influences.
