The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has recovered a stash of illicitly brewed kombucha drinks following a raid at a house in Waterfalls, Harare.

The discovery has sparked worries about the increase in unregulated beverage distribution in the local market.

Acting on a tip-off, police officers stormed the residence, uncovering large quantities of the fermented drink, which was reportedly being produced and stored under questionable conditions.

Police suspect the beverages were being distributed without proper licensing or health clearance, posing a potential health hazard to consumers.

ZRP confirmed the raid, stating that investigations are underway to determine the origin of the ingredients and whether the operation had links to a wider network of illicit beverage production.

Kombucha, a fermented ginger drink, is widely consumed for its supposed health benefits, but when brewed without regulation, it can develop harmful levels of alcohol and bacteria.

Health experts have repeatedly warned against consuming homemade or unregulated versions of the drink.

Police have urged members of the public to be cautious when purchasing beverages from unverified sources, emphasising that unregulated products could pose serious health risks.

ZRP has vowed to continue clamping down on illegal beverage manufacturers and has encouraged residents to report any suspicious activities involving the production of illicit drinks.
