The University of British Columbia (UBC) offers the International Scholars Program, which includes four prestigious need-and-merit-based awards aimed at international students:
Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award: This award honors exceptional international undergraduate students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance and exemplary leadership skills, fostering collaboration, empathy, and active listening.
Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award: This award supports remarkable international undergraduate students from underprivileged or conflict-affected regions who have excelled academically despite facing significant challenges.
International Impact Award: Offered to exceptional students who show leadership in sustainability, social justice, and community health, with priority given to first-generation learners and those from diverse backgrounds.
Vantage One Excellence Award: Designed for academically strong international students who have not yet met the English Language Admission Standard for direct entry to UBC.

Scholarship Value and Duration
The value of each award is based on the recipient’s financial need, calculated by considering tuition, fees, and living expenses, minus the family contribution. Scholarships may be renewed for up to three additional years, contingent on maintaining satisfactory academic standing and demonstrating ongoing financial need.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the International Scholars Program, applicants must:
– Be an international student applying with a Canadian study permit.
– Be entering UBC from a recognized secondary school or transferring from a post-secondary institution.
– Have graduated from high school no earlier than June two years prior to the application year.
– Be applying for their first undergraduate degree.
– Exhibit exceptional academic achievement (typically all As or equivalent).
– Demonstrate significant financial need that would hinder their ability to attend UBC.
– Meet UBC’s general and degree-specific admission requirements.
For the Vantage One Excellence Award, additional criteria include:
– Not meeting the English Language Admission Standard for direct admission.
– Meeting UBC Vantage College admission requirements.
Application Instructions
To apply, students must be nominated by their school or a non-profit organization and submit a reference from an academic referee. It’s crucial to confirm that the nominating body can submit a nomination. When applying, students will not choose a specific award; UBC will evaluate eligibility for all relevant awards.
