Brief Description:

The University of British Columbia’s (UBC) International Scholars Program offers distinguished need-and-merit-based awards to international students across four categories:

  1. Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award: Recognizes outstanding prospective international undergraduate students showcasing exceptional academic achievement and exemplary leadership skills that empower others through collaboration, empathy, and active listening.
  2. Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award: Acknowledges exceptional international undergraduate students from impoverished or war-torn areas who have excelled academically under challenging circumstances and require significant financial assistance to attend university.
  3. International Impact Award: Offered to outstanding students demonstrating leadership and commitment to sustainability, climate change, natural resource conservation and management, social justice, equity and inclusion, or societal health and wellness. Priority is given to first-generation learners and those from diverse backgrounds.
  4. Vantage One Excellence Award: Presented by UBC Vantage College for academically outstanding international students who do not yet meet the English Language Admission Standard for direct admission to UBC.

Scholarship Value/Inclusions/Duration:

The value of the UBC International Scholars Program is based on your financial need, calculated by considering tuition, fees, living costs, and your family’s financial contribution each year. The award is renewable for up to three additional years, subject to academic performance, financial need, and maintaining a Canadian study permit (student visa).


To be considered for the International Scholars Program, applicants must meet several criteria, including being an international student on a Canadian study permit, entering UBC from a recognized secondary school, and demonstrating superior academic achievement and financial need.

For the Vantage One Excellence Award, additional criteria apply, such as not meeting UBC’s English Language Admission Standard, meeting UBC Vantage College admission requirements, and beginning undergraduate studies in the UBC Vantage One Program.

Application Instructions:

Applicants must be nominated by their school or non-profit organization and provide a reference from an academic referee. The school or non-profit must confirm its ability to nominate the applicant. Applicants should inform their nominator and academic referee about their intention to apply for the International Scholars Program.

Application deadline for the International Scholars Program is 15 November, and the admissions application to UBC must be submitted by 1 December. UBC English Language Admission Requirement must be met by 31 January.
