Kazungula Road Claims Life in Shocking Elephant Collision

A heartbreaking accident on Wednesday evening has drawn attention to the growing tension between wildlife and motorists in Zimbabwe.

Roughly 40 kilometres from Victoria Falls along Kazungula Road, a Toyota Isis collided with a young female elephant, leading to one fatality and five injuries.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the vehicle was en route to Victoria Falls City when the driver tried to overtake a stationary car that had its hazard lights flashing. Unbeknownst to the overtaking driver, the stopped vehicle had paused to avoid an elephant crossing the road.

The Toyota Isis struck the elephant head-on. The impact caused the animal to collapse onto the vehicle’s roof, which sent the car veering approximately 100 metres into the surrounding bush with the elephant still on top. All six passengers were trapped inside the crushed vehicle.

Emergency services confirmed that the passenger seated in front died at the scene. The remaining occupants suffered various injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

Authorities, faced with the challenging situation, made the difficult decision to euthanise the severely injured elephant to safely extract the deceased from the wreckage. This outcome underscores the growing strain of human-wildlife coexistence in areas where animal habitats intersect with busy roads.

The tragic event highlights the escalating danger posed by human encroachment into wildlife corridors. As development continues, encounters like these may become more frequent, with dire consequences for both people and animals.

Our deepest condolences go to the family of the deceased, and we wish the survivors a full and swift recovery. Incidents such as this one reinforce the pressing need for thoughtful strategies to manage human-wildlife interactions and promote safety for all.
