The prosecution has brought more charges against cult leader Madzibaba Ishmael Chokurongerwa, and his trial is scheduled to start today.
Madzibaba Ishmael is currently charged with raping five juveniles, leading to the birth of six children, after being first detained for breaking the Burial and Cremation Act 5:03 and the Children’s Act 5:06. At the time of the alleged crimes, which are thought to have happened between 2018 and his arrest in March of this year, the victims were between the ages of 13 and 16.
The trial of Madzibaba Ishmael, overseen by Magistrate Christine Nyandoro, is anticipated to move quickly in accordance with the court’s prior order. If the trial doesn’t start today, Purity Chikangaise, his attorney, has hinted at a possible move to fight additional remand.

Along with Takavengwa Gwenzi, Siribiniyo Chikunire, Wonder Kabaya, Devlodge Katsande, Zebediah Sigudu, Aaron Chokurongerwa, and Shingirai Ngavafume, Madzibaba Ishmael is on trial. Although the High Court last month granted Madzibaba Ishmael $1,000 in bail, his co-accused are still free on bond.
Madzibaba Ishmael maintains his innocence and argues that the charges against him are untrue, citing the High Court’s upholding of his right to bail. He disputes accusations that he eluded justice and disputes any wrongdoing.
