Man Murdered in Case of Mistaken Identity

A 45-year-old man, mistaken for a thief, was fatally attacked by a mob in Crowborough and later found dead along a railway line. Trust Tanyanyiwa was last seen leaving his home on February 26, and his family learned of his death on April 14, when police informed them. He was buried on April 16.

Reports indicate that Tanyanyiwa was killed after being mistaken for a criminal. His brother noted discrepancies in the police reports about the timing of the incident, with one stating he was murdered around 3 PM and another suggesting a window between 3 and 4 AM.

Witnesses reported that a disturbance erupted as Tanyanyiwa walked with friends, with shouts of “thief” ringing out. A security guard observed the incident but did not intervene as three men emerged from a car, armed with batons, and pursued Tanyanyiwa before beating him to death.

After the attack, he was taken to a clinic, but it was not realized that he had already died. According to Tanyanyiwa’s nephew, the security guard contacted his supervisor for assistance after the assailants fled. By the time they arrived at Parirenyatwa Hospital, Tanyanyiwa was confirmed dead.

A friend of the deceased received a call regarding the incident from an unidentified individual, prompting them to search for Tanyanyiwa. They had already reported him missing, and upon contacting the Kuwadzana police, they were able to identify his body.
