Saini Shirichena, 54, and 17 others were advised to apply for bail at the High Court after magistrate Tinashe Ndokera deemed them a flight risk.

The state, led by prosecutor Shiella Kudzai Maribha, alleged that the group attacked workers at Rosa mine on June 18, using petrol bombs, explosives, stones, and catapults to settle a long-standing mining dispute.

The violent attack left several workers injured, including Hillary Paradza, who lost a hand, Simbarashe Chihono, who lost his palm, and Tanyaradzwa Ruzengwe, who suffered head injuries. Some victims were admitted to Bindura hospital for treatment.

The suspects were only stopped by a swift response from the Zimbabwe Republic Police Support Unit, who arrested the group and brought an end to the chaos.

The magistrate’s decision to deny bail sends a strong message that violence and destruction of property will not be tolerated in the mining community.
