Mob Assaults LGBTQ Rights Advocate Laurence Sparrow Makoroni in Harare

Harare, Zimbabwe | Laurence Sparrow Rugare Makoroni, a well-known LGBTQ rights advocate in Harare, was violently assaulted by a mob in Glen Norah.

Makoroni, who is openly gay and outspoken about LGBTQ rights, was attacked outside a local bar after being denied entry solely due to his sexual orientation.

Makoroni recounted the terrifying experience, stating that he was with friends when a group of about ten people began the attack. While some of his companions managed to escape, Makoroni and two others were left behind.

“They made it clear that we were like animals to them,” Makoroni said. “They threatened to kill us if we didn’t stop pretending to be something we’re not just because we’re gay.”

The assault resulted in Makoroni suffering injuries to his left hip and abdomen, inflicted by slaps and kicks. In addition to the physical abuse, the attackers, who were reportedly from the local area, issued chilling threats, warning Makoroni to change his sexual orientation or face further violence.

After the attack, Makoroni and his friends were taken to Wilkins Hospital for medical treatment. The incident has sparked concern among LGBTQ rights groups and highlighted ongoing issues of intolerance and violence against LGBTQ individuals in Zimbabwe.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police have confirmed the assault and are currently investigating the matter.

There is a growing call for law enforcement to take decisive action to ensure justice for Makoroni and to address the broader problem of hate crimes targeting LGBTQ communities in the country.
