Gilbert Chavhunduka, the national representative for traditional medicines in Zimbabwe, has issued a stark warning to cancer patients about the dangers of using Mumvee, commonly referred to as the sausage tree, as a treatment option.
He emphasized that this plant is primarily utilized for male enhancement and certain skin ailments.
In an interview with H-Metro, Dr. Chavhunduka criticized the misleading claims surrounding Mumvee’s efficacy for various illnesses. He stated:
“We advise individuals to avoid relying on herbs promoted by those seeking followers and to consult qualified herbalists or traditional healers.
Mumvee is not a cure-all as advertised, and the collection of its seeds should cease. People are losing their lives because they neglect proper treatment. Recently, I heard about a case where someone died after consuming the seeds under the impression they could cure cancer.”

Dr. Chavhunduka clarified that, in Zimbabwe and other parts of Africa, Mumvee is primarily recognized for male enhancement rather than cancer treatment as advertised.
While the pulp of the unripe Mumvee fruit is highly toxic if consumed, a specially processed extract has been traditionally used to treat various skin conditions, including fungal infections, psoriasis, eczema, and boils. These traditional uses are backed by research conducted by both herbalists and medical professionals.
Dr. Chavhunduka added:
“The tree is being misused, and improper handling can lead to fatalities. The hype around this plant originated from an individual promoting his nursery, falsely claiming that the seeds could treat cancer.
Tragically, someone recently died after mishandling the seeds, which should not be exposed to sunlight due to their toxicity.
People must learn how to prepare these herbs correctly and stop self-medicating. Mumvee should be used solely for male enhancement or certain skin treatments; any other applications are incorrect.”
