Muponda Steps Down from ZIFA Election, Pledges Support to Magwizi

Gilbert Muponda, a former contender for the presidency of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), has announced his withdrawal from the race in favor of Nqobile Magwizi.

In his statement, Muponda explained that his decision followed extensive consultations. He described Magwizi as a highly qualified and experienced candidate with a strong track record in resource mobilization for football, making him the best choice for the role. Muponda stated:

“My campaign focused on transforming Zimbabwean football into a thriving industry that could significantly contribute to the country’s GDP”.

Muponda outlined five core principles central to this vision: commercialisation, monetisation, corporatisation, standardisation, and modernisation. He emphasized that these principles were intended to elevate the sport to international standards while ensuring that all stakeholders, including players, fans, women, and youth, gain substantial benefits. Muponda also noted:

The nomination period for the ZIFA elections is set to close on December 11. Following this, all nominations will undergo an integrity screening process to determine eligibility for the upcoming election.

Candidates who have submitted their nominations include Magwizi, Marshall Gore, Themba Mliswa, Farai Jere, and Walter Magaya.

Magwizi, who has been involved with Banket Mine Football Club as a board member since 2017, is also currently overseeing the project to install bucket seats at the National Sports Stadium.
