In Africa, young people can increase their chances of securing jobs by developing skills relevant to industries that are expected to thrive in the future. This is according to the Youth Employment Service (YES), a full-time employment initiative in the country.
Aditi Lachman, head of the Youth Programme at YES, shares five essential tips for young jobseekers aiming to secure meaningful employment.
1. Focus on Future Skills
According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, over 60% of South African businesses have identified skill gaps as a barrier to transformation by 2030. These businesses are preparing to either upskill their current employees or hire new talent to fill emerging needs. Key sectors for future employment include:
- Information Technology
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Solar panel installation
- Tourism
- Creative industries
- Drone technology
- Robotics
Jobseekers should focus on acquiring the relevant skills for these sectors through various methods, such as attending training programs, completing online courses, or taking internships to gain hands-on experience. Notably, 34% of businesses are moving away from degree requirements, opening new opportunities for those with the right skills but no formal qualifications.
2. The Value of Work Experience
A YES survey reveals that managers consider two or more years of relevant work experience as valuable, sometimes even more so than formal qualifications. Jobseekers can gain significant advantages by accumulating practical experience, even without a formal degree.

3. Networking and Growth Opportunities
Networking is crucial for career development. Lachman suggests jobseekers should focus on building professional relationships, whether they are already employed or looking for opportunities. Connecting with colleagues, attending industry events, and joining professional associations can open doors for mentorship and job referrals.
4. Start a Side Hustle or Business
Starting a micro-business is an effective way to gain entrepreneurial experience and enter the broader economy. According to the YES Youth Employment Survey, 15% of YES youth are actively involved in entrepreneurial activities, which is helping them hone the skills needed to grow their businesses.
5. Prioritize Mental Health
Mental health is a key factor in personal and professional well-being. A UNICEF South Africa poll found that 65% of young South Africans experience mental health issues but often do not seek help. Symptoms like persistent sadness, fatigue, and social withdrawal may indicate mental health challenges. Seeking professional help and prioritizing mental fitness is vital to navigating these difficulties effectively.
By focusing on these strategies, young South Africans can better position themselves for a fulfilling and successful career in an evolving job market.
