Celebrated UK based musician Tsungai Tsikirai unveiled her new album African Queen on Saturday 4th January at the Jasen Mphepo Little Theatre in Harare.
The vibrant event, a tribute to Zimbabwean culture and talent, featured a dynamic performance by the Iyasa group and was attended by prominent figures from the arts and entertainment sector.

The evening began with guests enjoying local traditional dishes, creating a warm and culturally rich atmosphere. Iyasa leader Nkululeko Dube shared reflections on Tsungai’s journey as a former member of the internationally acclaimed ensemble. Later, acclaimed poet Albert Nyathi delivered an inspiring account of Tsungai’s musical evolution, tracing her artistic roots to her school years.
Tsungai showcased her remarkable talent and versatility during her performance. Her band included some of the country’s finest musicians, such as guitarist Trust Mutekwa from the renowned band Mokoomba, percussionist Othnell Mangoma, drummer Abel “The Drummer,” and bassist Stimela, a distinguished female artist. Their synchronized efforts enthralled the audience, demonstrating an impressive blend of musical mastery.

Mike Tashaya, a passionate supporter of local talent, emphasized the importance of celebrating Zimbabwean culture in music. “We must champion artists like Tsungai, who showcase our unique talent to the world. Authenticity is key to preserving our heritage,” he stated, underscoring the significance of cultural authenticity.
Hosted by Godfrey Koti, the event attracted a diverse audience, including former Iyasa members Malinga and Dudu Manhenga, accompanied by her husband, Blessing Muparutsa. Representatives from the Zimbabwe German Society, including Catlina Hanisch, as well as a group of American guests, added an international touch, highlighting the broad appeal of Tsungai’s music.

Tsungai’s commanding vocals and effortless transitions between singing and dancing captivated the audience. Iyasa’s energetic performances added to the spectacle, with their intricate choreography and storytelling perfectly complementing Tsungai’s musical narrative.
Liam an audience member, lauded Tsungai’s artistry, praising her mesmerizing voice, smooth stage transitions, and storytelling. “She embodies the essence of an African Queen, staying true to her Zimbabwean roots while creating music that resonates with people of all ages and backgrounds,” he remarked.
The night ended with thunderous applause, as Tsungai’s album launch redefined the celebration of Zimbabwean talent. With African Queen, Tsungai Tsikirai cements her place as a cultural ambassador, presenting the richness of local music to the global stage and inspiring a deeper appreciation for authentic artistry.
