Global Focus on U.S. Election as Harris and Trump Fight for Historic Presidency

Kamala Harris, the Democratic Vice President, and former Republican President Donald Trump are locked in a tight race for the White House, with the outcome of the 2024 U.S. election still uncertain as votes are counted across the country.

As the results began to pour in on Tuesday, Trump had secured wins in 22 states, including key battlegrounds such as Texas and Ohio, while Harris had claimed victory in 10 states, including major electoral prizes like California and New York. By early Wednesday morning, Trump had amassed 211 electoral votes, while Harris had secured 153.

The election, with its momentous implications for both the United States and the global community, is expected to be decided by a handful of swing states. Key battlegrounds like Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, and Wisconsin remain up in the air, and final results could take hours or even days to emerge, depending on how tight the margins are in these regions.

Trump, who has refused to accept his loss in the 2020 election, projected confidence, declaring, “We’re going to have a big victory tonight” as early results came in. Harris, campaigning across the country, urged Americans to vote, especially focusing on radio and phone outreach.

In a tense election day marked by bomb threats against polling stations, particularly in Georgia and Pennsylvania, voting was temporarily halted in some areas, but no credible threats were reported. Despite these disruptions, election day proceeded with high levels of voter turnout, including a significant number of early votes.

In what could be an ominous sign for the future, Trump suggested widespread voter fraud in Philadelphia, a key city in Pennsylvania, although officials dismissed his claims. As the night wore on, some Washington D.C. businesses were boarded up in anticipation of possible unrest, especially if Trump were to lose.

As the race continues, Harris is poised to make history, potentially becoming the first woman, and the first woman of South Asian and Black descent, to hold the office of President. Trump, 78, would become the oldest person to serve as president if re-elected and, if successful, would be the first to serve non-consecutive terms.

Both candidates have heavily focused their campaigns on critical issues: Harris has strongly opposed Trump’s stance on abortion rights, while Trump has emphasized his hardline immigration policies.

The outcome of the election will not only determine the next U.S. president but will also have significant ramifications for global politics, including ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
