Businessman Wicknell Chivayo has shared his views on the recent discussions in the United States regarding the possibility of former President Donald Trump serving a third term. He believes that exceptional leadership should not be restricted by term limits if it benefits the nation.
Taking to social media, Chivayo compared the situation in the U.S. to Zimbabwe, where he praised President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s leadership. He suggested that Zimbabweans should consider extending Mnangagwa’s presidency, arguing that such a decision would align with the people’s interests.
Chivayo emphasized that in a democratic society, national progress should take precedence over rigid constitutional limits. He dismissed criticism that he was advocating for Mnangagwa’s continued rule out of self-interest, stating:
“I personally believe that progress must take precedence over procedural constraints created by a Constitution. Most will say I’m singing for my supper, and yes indeed, without a shadow of a doubt, I will also sing for breakfast and lunch too.”

Highlighting the importance of policy continuity, he pointed to frequent leadership transitions in the U.S. as a source of instability. He argued that Zimbabwe must avoid similar disruptions, emphasizing that Mnangagwa’s leadership has laid a strong foundation for economic growth and stability.
Chivayo asserted that allowing Mnangagwa to continue beyond the current term would ensure consistency in governance, which he views as essential for Zimbabwe’s long-term development goals, including Vision 2030.
“In my view, a performing President like President E.D. must be allowed to complete his vision for the nation. The will of the people should always be at the core of democracy.
Frequent leadership changes lead to policy inconsistencies, as seen in the U.S.A., where decisions made by previous administrations are often reversed overnight.”
He further argued that Zimbabwe’s Constitution, as a “living document,” should evolve to reflect the aspirations of the people. While Mnangagwa has publicly stated he will not seek a third term, Chivayo believes an extension of his leadership would be in the country’s best interest.
“The Constitution is made by the people and for the people. It must evolve to align with the majority’s aspirations. President Mnangagwa has demonstrated exceptional leadership and gained the trust of the people. With the grace of God, an extension of his term would greatly benefit the nation.”
Despite his strong support for Mnangagwa, Chivayo remains a divisive figure. Critics accuse him of leveraging political connections to secure lucrative government contracts rather than relying on business acumen. He has often been labeled a “tenderpreneur” due to his perceived ties to the ruling party.
Leaked audio recordings have added to the controversy, with Chivayo allegedly boasting about his influence over the president and Zimbabwe’s political system. In one of the recordings, he reportedly claimed:
“Ndakachibata kuti dzvii,” implying he has significant control over key political figures.
His remarks have fueled debates over the intersection of business and politics in Zimbabwe, with some questioning whether his calls for Mnangagwa’s extended rule are driven by personal interests rather than national progress.
