US President Joe Biden will hand off the baton to Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee for November’s election in an emotional farewell speech on Monday at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
Biden should anticipate a hero’s farewell from many of the same individuals who assisted in pushing him out due to age concerns, little than a month after Harris’s startling climb and his startling exit.
The 81-year-old is anticipated to declare that Harris, the nation’s first Black female vice president, is the most qualified candidate to complete the task he began of defending American democracy against opposition Republican Donald Trump.
In a symbolic gesture intended to demonstrate Democratic unity on his succession, Harris is scheduled to make a fleeting appearance on stage with her boss during his primetime speech.
But one legacy of his presidency is a massive demonstration against the Biden-Harris administration’s backing of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, which is scheduled to take place in Chicago.

Following a weekend spent honing his speech with senior aides at the Camp David presidential retreat in rural Maryland, Biden declared on Sunday that he felt “good, real good” about it.
As a lame-duck president with only one term left, Biden knows all too well that his legacy depends on Harris’ ability to defeat Trump; if she fails, many will hold him responsible for his protracted hold.
First Lady Jill Biden,73, who stood by her husband during the last moments before his fateful choice on July 21, will also be performing live in Chicago.
However, the aging president will surely be feeling conflicted because he has seen Harris overtake Trump in the polls and inspire Americans in a way that he was never able to achieve as a candidate.
A few weeks ago, Biden would have had the slot for Harris’s headline address on Thursday; instead, he now finds himself as her warm-up act.
Rather than staying for her big night, he’s leaving right after his speech to begin a six-day vacation in California while the conference goes on without him.
But Biden will also know that Chicago Democrats will be welcoming of him as he begins the last phase of a five-decade political career.
“I’m feeling sentimental,” exclaimed LaurieBeth Hager, a North Dakota state representative attending the conference in Chicago, praising Biden as a “great president.”
