I have known Arifonso “Mosquito” Zvenyika for over 25 years, and our relationship, which started professionally, has grown to become one of deep personal connection, like family.
This strong bond might explain why I was likely the first—and possibly the only person—he turned to when he discovered the devastating messages of betrayal from his wife.
At that moment, all Mosquito wanted was for the truth about his wife’s affair to be exposed. He felt an urgent need for public acknowledgment of their wrongdoing, and nothing else mattered.
I reached out to his wife, who was surprised by the messages and questioned why Mosquito had shared them with me. “For you to inform the nation?” she asked.
The story unfolded publicly from there. As a journalist, I did my job, and H-Metro published it, where it quickly spread across the media.
Recently, news broke that Mosquito and his wife, Jesman Mutokonya, had reconciled and were back together. While I have no desire to judge their decision, as it’s their marriage and their choice, I couldn’t help but reflect on their journey, especially considering the personal history that might have influenced his current situation.
Mosquito has a large family, including children from several marriages, one of whom he had when he was just 16.
Is Mosquito a Victim of His Past?
Throughout our many conversations, Mosquito often spoke about the lack of parental guidance in his early life, which he felt led him to start a family at the young age of 16. Although details about that first marriage are scarce, it ended, as many early marriages do, in failure.
His second marriage was also troubled, but it was in 1998 that he rose to prominence after winning the Commonwealth flyweight title. Returning home a hero, Mosquito’s life changed drastically.
Suddenly, he had the means to indulge in luxury cars and sought out a successful woman to marry. He once told me, “No one else but a nurse could do.”
Fascinated by the idea of marrying someone in the same profession as a boxer he admired, he secured a marriage to a nurse, which produced a child. Unfortunately, this union nearly ended in tragedy when the wife left him to marry a doctor. Mosquito’s devastation led him to attempt suicide.
But true to his resilience, Mosquito eventually remarried. Sadly, his second wife passed away a few years later, a tragedy that hit him hard, especially financially. He was so broke that he couldn’t even afford the basic funeral expenses.
I recall the former champion coming to Herald House to inform me of his wife’s death, but I was initially skeptical due to some past issues with him. Earlier, I had helped him secure funds from businessman Victor Nyaumwe to start a business, but after receiving the money, he disappeared for a week. Now, facing tragedy, Mosquito again reached out to me for help. This time, I turned to Philip Chiyangwa, a former boxing promoter, who graciously covered the funeral costs.
Later, Mosquito married his current wife, Jesman. Their wedding was a grand affair, with a performance by The Police Band as they exchanged vows.
And Now, the Drama Continues
Now, Mosquito’s current marital issues have become the subject of intense public scrutiny. The overwhelming majority of the comments on the H-Metro stories about the couple are critical of his decisions. Many feel that his explanations about reconciling with his wife do not align with the sequence of events leading to the drama.
People question why Mosquito chose to backtrack despite having enough evidence to pursue legal action, especially after initially vowing to confront his wife’s boyfriend. The change of heart is perplexing to many.

Some wonder if a private settlement or pressure from his family might have prompted him to reconcile. Regardless, public opinion has been harsh, with many accusing him of letting down the very people who supported him.
In an ironic twist, the boyfriend, Leonard Jamanda, not only denied the accusations but had the audacity to taunt Mosquito, suggesting he keep better control of his wife.
The story has sparked outrage among Mosquito’s followers on social media, with figures like Shadaya Knight also voicing their disappointment. What many expected was a long legal battle, with the victor emerging scarred but victorious. Instead, they were left shocked by Mosquito’s unexpected decision to forgive.
