The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has introduced new mandatory fees for the inspection of electrical installations and generators to improve safety and ensure compliance with national electrical standards.
This move follows a series of recent incidents involving house fires and electrical accidents, which have highlighted the need for such measures. In a public notice, ZETDC outlined a compulsory fee of US$25 for the inspection and re-inspection of electrical installations.

Additionally, generator owners will be required to pay inspection fees based on the type and capacity of their generators. The fees are structured as follows:
- Generator Verification and Safety Inspection Fees:
- Up to 100KW (petrol, diesel, solar, wind, etc.): $5.00
- Above 100KW (petrol, diesel, solar, wind, etc.): $50.00
- Advanced Safety Inspection Fees:
- For generators under 100KW: $20.00
- For generators above 100KW: $100.00
- For prototype generators under 100KW: $100.00
ZETDC emphasized that these inspections are critical in preventing electrical hazards such as fires, shocks, and unsafe connections, which can pose serious risks to users and the public.
The utility reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring all electrical installations meet safety standards and encouraged cooperation from customers during inspections to ensure a safer environment. While acknowledging potential minor inconveniences during the process, ZETDC stressed that the safety of families and property must remain the top priority.
ZETDC also reminded customers to make all payments through its official payment channels and avoid paying individuals directly during the inspection process, as receipts will be provided for all transactions.
