Zim Moot Court Set For European Competition

ZIMBABWE’S National High School Moot Court squad has been invited for a European competition, after their recent triumph as world champions, in the United States.

The 11-member team was crowned champions in their maiden participation at the International Moot Court Competitions held on Africa Day.

Zimbabwe was roped in as the defence team, against New York, who were prosecuting in a fictitious international humanitarian war crime case before the International Criminal Court Judges.

The students, who made it to the prestigious competition, were drawn from the Dominican Convent School, Midlands Christian College, Arundale School and Peterhouse.

Speaking at a homecoming ceremony, hosted by the Dominican Convent, Team Zimbabwe leader,Ruvimbo Simbi, said they can’t wait for the European adventure.

“Just as we couldn’t believe our feat at the world competitions, we also can’t wait for the European tour where we are going up against tough opponents.

“This is uplifting for us and we are already planning for the trip to flex our muscles as the world champions.

“I am looking forward to the exchange and believe in the team that I lead,” said Simbi.

Some of the students, who make up the team, include Palesa Sigauke, Hazel Chiige, Karl Makahamadze, Kudzaishe Makoni, Rosa Choto Gwisai, Chiyevo Mukonoweshure, Tadiwanashe Choto, Kuziva Khuleya, Sharon Marangwanda and Selumeli Angelinah Thulo.

The team was under the stewardship of Nqobile Dube, who is already focused on the European adventure.

The moot court is a simulation of actual court proceedings where participants are treated to a fictitious case and argue on the merits as the prosecution or the defence.

The Zimbabwe students are the first team to achieve the feat on the continent and are billed to attract more attention in Europe.
