A local non-profit making organisation has donated food hampers to the elderly from Harare and some peri-urban settlements.
The Zimbabwe Empowerment Trust(ZIMET) President Pastor Alexia Kuona officiating at the hand over ceremony on Monday at Theatre in the Park at Harare Gardens said the gesture was motivated by the need to ease the burden on the elderly whose lives have been affected by the sanctions.
“We have realised that sanctions have caused untold suffering to many people especially the elderly. As an organisation we saw it befitting to empower ourselves to fight the sanctions .
“So these food hampers we are donating are amony many other income generating projects we are rolling out for us to beat the illegal sanctions,”she said .
According to the guest of honour,Taurai Kandishaya who is the Zanu PF youth league deputy commissar ,the initiative by ZIMET is commendable as it came a day before the Anti-Sanctions Day set aside by SADC to denounce the illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.
“What your organisation has done is laudable because you have done it today when tommorrow we are commemorating the Anti-Sanctions Day that SADC set as a day of solidarity against the illegal sanctions imposed on us by Western countries,”he said.
The Zanu PF youth league executive member went on to highlight that sanctions were the reason behind the economic meltdown the country is experiencing and are mearnt to whip citizens emotions to revolt against the government.
“Sanctions were put in place for citizens to incite people to turn against the government. They are just there to entrench white supremacy and the Western countries are behind the collapse of the manufacturing industries,”he said .
“But we also have to acknowledge the various infrastructural development that President Emmerson Mnangagwa is implementing like construction of dams and the refurbishment of roads.I am grateful that your organisation is complementing his efforts he cant be everywhere to help out,”added Kandishaya.
Some of the beneficiaries of the food hampers could not hide their joy.
“I an grateful that I have received this food hamper since I am struggling to feed my family ,being a widow and taking care of my grandchildren has not been easy,”said Gogo Munemo from Domboshava.
Apart from donating food hampers ,ZIMET is training citizens across the country in various empowerment projects like soap making and market gardening ,its CEO Dr Zinyama Rutonho said.
