WATCH: ZRP Officers Taking Bribes from Drug Dealers in Chitungwiza

A disturbing incident captured on video has led to allegations that police officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Makoni cycle unit in Chitungwiza were involved in accepting bribes instead of taking action against suspected drug dealers.

The video, which has gone viral on social media, shows police officers reportedly collecting bribes from individuals allegedly linked to drug trafficking activities in the area.

According to the video circulating, the officers visited the Mautopa unit, near Unit L bus stop, where they are believed to have engaged in bribery with individuals known to supply illicit drugs such as marijuana (mbanje), bronco (a common cough syrup used recreationally), and mutoriro (a street drug known for its dangerous effects).

These drugs have become increasingly prevalent in various neighborhoods, with young people, in particular, being targeted by dealers looking to capitalize on addiction.

Drug abuse has been a serious issue in Zimbabwe, with a surge in the use of various illicit substances among young people. Many communities, particularly in urban areas like Chitungwiza, have struggled to combat the influx of these drugs, which contribute to a range of social problems, including addiction, crime, and violence.

While law enforcement agencies are tasked with addressing these challenges, concerns over corruption within the police force are not new.

The video capturing the alleged bribery has sparked widespread outrage on social media and among community members.

People are calling for immediate action to hold the officers involved accountable and for a more robust approach to addressing drug trafficking in Chitungwiza and other affected areas. Many citizens are questioning why those who are entrusted with upholding the law seem to be benefiting from the very crimes they are supposed to prevent.
