On Sunday evening, Alick Macheso unexpectedly concluded his performance at a family show held at Jongwe Corner in the capital after receiving tragic news about fellow artist Tatenda Pinjisi.
As Macheso entertained the audience, word spread about Pinjisi’s passing. An audience member rushed to the stage to inform him of the news. Known for his dynamic stage presence, Macheso appeared visibly shaken and expressed his confusion to the crowd.
“Ndapererwa, asimwarika. Tatenda Pinjisi was in an accident while traveling to Kadoma, where his drummer and rhythmist died instantly. I’ve just learned that Tatenda has also passed away,” Macheso shared, clearly moved by the loss.
In a heartfelt tribute, he performed Pinjisi’s popular song, “Saina.” Afterward, he took a seat beside his drummer and eventually left the Orchestra Mberikwazvo band members to conclude the performance.

Later, Macheso released a statement expressing his condolences to the Pinjisi family and acknowledging the other three victims of the tragic accident.
“Rufu imbavha, kuti torera umwe wedu kutisiya tichichema amayo. We extend our sympathies to the Pinjisi family during this difficult time.”
Tatenda Pinjisi, a talented sungura musician, sadly passed away at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital due to injuries from a road accident. His burial is set to take place in Mutoko tomorrow.
Heartfelt tributes for Pinjisi have been pouring in from the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) and fellow musicians, with Alick Macheso leading the way in honoring his memory.
