Choirs from Harare and Chitungwiza gathered together at Theatre in the Park to celebrate the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition on 23 August 2017.
At this well attended event the choirs took turns to recite African American spirituals a musical genre that brought together African men, women and children to comfort and strength in foreign lands.
Classic choral melodies with a dash of opera were witnessed from the famous Glorious Melodies Choir, Chitungwiza Harmony Singers who are multiple award winners in Zimbabwe and Africa followed by another talented group Harare Choral Choir doing justice to these Black Freedom circular songs.
Music Crossroads own Nancy and Chioniso came in with solo acts where they portrayed the suffering black slave woman piercing the heart of the audience adopting the pain down to the soul.
The main attraction of the evening was Note2Note, as they went through their slot performing famous songs Glory, Steal Away, Oh Freedom and Go-Down Moses the whole audience rose up to cheer them.
Spoken word artist and radio personality Soprofound Arnold Chirimka added the icing on the cake when he made an appearance on the first two sets of Note2Note’s performances with his poetic lyrics .
The Sabelo Nyoni Masawure led choir indeed once again claimed the stage just the way they did it at the NIAA Eisteddfod where they walked away with four trophies only that this time around it was not a competition but a celebration of black freedom.
In the audience was guest of honour Albert Nyathi, Mrs Kasukuwere, Kessiah Magosha aka Muchaneta and Dereck Mpofu.
“Hopefully this gathering is the beginning of more choral music concerts countrywide,” said Albert Nyathi who openly appreciated all the performances from all the choirs.
