Mary Mubaiwa, the former wife of Zimbabwean Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, made a harrowing appearance at the Harare Magistrates Court, where she was wheeled in after recent amputations of her left leg and right hand.
Mubaiwa, who has been facing a prolonged legal battle, is petitioning the court for a permanent stay of prosecution, citing her deteriorating health as grounds for the request.
Mubaiwa’s lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa, stated in court that Mubaiwa’s condition has reached a critical stage, rendering her unable to participate effectively in her own defense. “Her health has deteriorated severely,” Mtetwa told the court, noting that her client’s physical and mental state have been profoundly affected. Due to ongoing pain, frequent sedation, and dependence on medication, Mubaiwa’s ability to communicate coherently and participate in legal proceedings has been substantially hindered, Mtetwa explained.

Mubaiwa, who was once a prominent figure in Zimbabwe’s social circles, has endured a lengthy legal ordeal following the breakdown of her marriage to Chiwenga. Since their separation, she has faced a series of charges, including attempted murder, fraud, and money laundering allegations she has repeatedly denied, asserting her innocence throughout.
Her health, however, has continued to worsen over recent years, and a rare medical condition led to her leg and hand amputations. Mtetwa argued that, given Mubaiwa’s significant impairments and continuous pain, proceeding with the trial would be both inhumane and legally unjustifiable.
