The Minister of Information Communication Technology (ICT), Postal and Courier Services, Tatenda Mavetera, emphasized the transformative potential of technology in addressing challenges, particularly in the healthcare sector.
Speaking at the Healthathon 2.0 grand finale, hosted by Cimas in collaboration with the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT), Mavetera highlighted the crucial role of innovation and digital solutions in the evolving healthcare landscape.
In a speech delivered by Beaulah Chirume, the permanent secretary in the ICT ministry, Mavetera noted that the global healthcare system is facing increasing pressure from rising costs and complex demands.
To meet these challenges, she stressed the importance of home-grown, efficient, and accessible technological solutions, which were showcased during the event. “Digital transformation in healthcare is no longer a luxury but an essential part of our development strategies,” Mavetera stated.
The Healthathon, themed “Transforming Healthcare: Pioneering Tomorrow’s Health Solutions,” was designed to promote creativity among young innovators in addressing critical healthcare issues in Zimbabwe.
Cimas group operations officer Thando Kembo praised the participants for their contributions to the development of digital health solutions, assuring that the company would pursue all the ideas presented, regardless of whether they won.
One of the standout projects was Epi, a digital application developed by three young innovators: Munashe Dube from the University of Zimbabwe, Rutendo Gatsi from Trust College, and Lincoln Casette, an Electronics Engineering graduate from HIT.
The Epi app aims to provide real-time monitoring for epilepsy patients, enabling early warnings before a seizure and allowing them to move to a safer location. The team was awarded $1,500 for their innovative solution.

Other notable projects included Astro, developed by HIT students, and Hypernova, which were the first and second runners-up, respectively. The event featured a total of ten competing teams, with several other groups receiving recognition for their efforts, including Eksani Systems and Dev Bytes, who received cash prizes, while other teams were awarded certificates.
Mavetera’s message underscored the importance of continued support for digital solutions, as they play a critical role in enhancing healthcare delivery and overall societal well-being.
