Idris Elba is eyeing a move to Africa within the next five to ten years.
The ‘Luther’ actor, born in London to Ghanaian and Sierra Leonean parents, is eager to connect with his roots. He has plans to establish film studios in both Zanzibar and Ghana.
In a conversation with the BBC, Elba expressed his firm intention to relocate, stating, “It’s going to happen. I think I’ll move in the next five, ten years, God willing. I’m here to strengthen the film industry, and that’s a process that requires my presence on the continent.”
Elba shared his desire to split his time between Accra, the capital of Ghana, Freetown in Sierra Leone, and Zanzibar, emphasizing the importance of being close to the storytelling hubs.
He remarked, “I’m going to live in Accra, Freetown, and Zanzibar. I want to be where the stories are being told.”

Additionally, Elba is passionate about reshaping Africa’s cinematic portrayal. He noted, “Many films depict Africa through a lens of trauma, focusing on slavery and conflict. But when you visit, you see a different reality. It’s crucial that we own our narratives—our traditions, cultures, and languages.”
He stressed the need for investment in authentic storytelling, saying, “When you see me, you see a reflection of yourself, and that can be inspiring.”
