Former Zanu PF Member of Parliament for Chivhu South, Killer Zivhu, has expressed sympathy for a young mother who recently made headlines after assaulting her 10-month-old baby. While condemning her actions, Zivhu attributed her behavior to the devastating impact of poverty and frustration.
In a statement, Zivhu stressed that the solution lies not in punitive measures but in addressing the root causes of her behavior.
He argued that counseling and emotional support are essential to rehabilitate the mother rather than resorting to imprisonment, which would separate her from her child and cause further suffering.
“I do not condone what the mother did,” Zivhu clarified. “However, her behavior is a reflection of the frustration that comes with extreme poverty. She does not need prison — she needs counseling to help her become a better parent and find stability in her life.”
As part of his efforts to assist the mother in rebuilding her life, Zivhu announced that he would offer her US$2,500. The funds, he explained, are meant to give her a fresh start, helping her establish a livelihood and create a more stable environment for her and her child.
Zivhu’s approach highlights the importance of tackling the socio-economic challenges faced by many struggling parents in Zimbabwe. He emphasized that incarcerating the mother would only exacerbate the situation by depriving the child of maternal care and potentially worsening the cycle of poverty and neglect.

The gesture has sparked conversations about how to handle cases involving parental abuse stemming from economic hardship. Many have commended Zivhu for advocating a rehabilitative approach, while others argue that justice must also be served to protect children from harm.
Zivhu has built a reputation for taking a hands-on approach to community issues, often supporting families in need and promoting solutions that address the underlying causes of social problems. His recent intervention serves as a reminder that poverty remains a pressing issue in Zimbabwe, driving many to desperation and irrational behavior.
As the case gains attention, Zivhu’s proposal to provide counseling and financial support reflects a growing call for more compassionate responses to cases involving struggling parents. Whether his offer will spark further dialogue on reforming the way Zimbabwe handles such matters remains to be seen.
