Sengezo Tshabangu, the self-appointed interim secretary-general of the CCC, has defended his recent visit to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Pricabe Farm, which he attended with several CCC MPs. Tshabangu argued that engaging with ZANU PF does not amount to betrayal of the opposition’s principles.
Tshabangu, who declared himself the leader of the opposition in Parliament after taking control of the party in 2023, faced backlash for the visit, which was not related to parliamentary duties. In an interview with State media on Wednesday, he emphasized that the CCC would remain independent while engaging with the ruling party. He stated:
“It is misguided to suggest that an opposition party interacting with the ruling government is ‘selling out.’ How else should state matters be handled? Democracies around the world foster dialogue between ruling and opposition parties.”
Tshabangu pointed out that the primary concern for the opposition should be remaining true to the needs of its supporters, rather than opposing the government for the sake of opposition itself. He further noted:
“The real task is to offer sound, locally-driven solutions that are in the best interest of Zimbabwe and its people.”

Although Tshabangu supported ZANU PF’s proposal to delay the 2028 elections and extend Mnangagwa’s term until 2030 during the farm visit, he clarified that CCC had not discussed the matter yet. He added:
“At this stage, the proposal is an internal issue for ZANU PF. They have not approached us or brought it before the relevant legislative body.”
Tshabangu also stated that the party was focused on strengthening its internal structure in preparation for a congress, which he assured would happen as soon as conditions allowed.
