Saul Shezhu, a 27-year-old resident of Jinkstown, Chegutu, has been arrested for the murder of his colleague Nyikadzino Mataruse following a night of heavy drinking.
The incident occurred after Shezhu and another friend, Stepmore Mutandavari, had spent the day consuming alcohol and singing. According to Mutandavari, Nyikadzino expressed a sense of unease about the night.
Around 10 PM, while Nyikadzino was walking ahead of Shezhu and Mutandavari, Shezhu launched a brutal attack. After Mutandavari parted ways with the two, Shezhu used a six-inch knife to slit Nyikadzino’s throat, resulting in instant death.
Local headman Sabhuku Kandira revealed that Shezhu had a troubling history of violence, including previous attempts to harm his parents and a young girl. Kandira also noted that Shezhu had previously bribed police to evade arrest.
Esteri Gasiya, the mother of the girl Shezhu had attempted to assault, criticized the police for their handling of her daughter’s case. She has called for a life sentence for Shezhu, citing him as a danger to the community.
Nyikadzino’s body was discovered the following morning by a passerby who notified the community. Saul Shezhu is currently in custody at Norton Police Station.
