Shiri sought refuge at Amos Chimbetete’s (76) homestead, about a kilometer away, where he encountered three juveniles. Leading them to a maize field for safety, Shiri fled to a nearby mountain. However, Hungwe pursued him to the field, where he fatally struck an 8-year-old boy and a 5-year-old boy.
Another juvenile was also injured before Amos Chimbetete arrived at the scene, hearing the children’s cries. In a brave attempt to intervene, Chimbetete was also attacked by Hungwe, who struck him on the head with the axe. Hearing Chimbetete’s distress, Amos Muzondo (52) rushed to help and managed to disarm Hungwe.
After the incident, Hungwe returned to his homestead and set two huts on fire. Trust Svuruto (38) reported the matter to Chivi police station, leading to Hungwe’s arrest.
