A devastating road accident in Mabvuku has claimed the lives of five people, leaving several others injured.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the incident on their official social media handle, stating that a lorry collided head-on with a commuter omnibus, followed by another commuter omnibus crashing into the first one.
The accident occurred yesterday evening along Donnybrook Road, Chizhanje area, Mabvuku.
According to eyewitnesses, the drivers of the commuter omnibuses were speeding and driving recklessly, leading to the tragic collision.
The police statement revealed that five people died on the spot, while several others were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals. The identities of the victims have not been released yet.
The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many condemning the reckless driving of commuter omnibus drivers.
Some netizens offered their condolences to the families of the victims, while others called for stricter measures to curb the menace of reckless driving.
“This is very bad! The government needs to do something about these drivers. They drive like it’s Formula 1!” said Caroline Ndlovu.
“Reckless driving, indisciplined drivers, and competition for passengers are the cause of 75% of road accidents in our country! Very saddening,” added Felistus Nkomo.
The police have urged drivers to exercise caution and follow traffic rules to avoid such tragic incidents.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
