In a surprising turn of events, Elizabeth Macheka, the widow of late Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, has opened the doors of his prestigious Highlands mansion to members of the ruling ZANU PF party, according to an exclusive report by publication.
The revelation came to light during the recent visit of Nigerian cleric Chris Okafor to Zimbabwe, sponsored by the ZANU PF-aligned outfit, the Economic Empowerment Group (EEG). Okafor’s arrival at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport was met with a warm reception from EEG President Mike Chimombe and a group of ZANU PF supporters. They swiftly escorted Okafor to Tsvangirai’s residence in an impressive motorcade under the watchful eye of the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
Contrary to Tsvangirai’s longstanding opposition to ZANU PF during his lifetime, the atmosphere within the lavish mansion was so cordial that Okafor and EEG members were heard chanting ZANU PF slogans, marking a stark departure from the late trade unionist’s principles.
The mansion, acquired for Tsvangirai by the government during the 2009-2013 Government of National Unity (GNU), now reportedly operates as a lodge, according to Zodwa Mkandla, a confidante of Macheka who was involved in coordinating Okafor’s visit. Mkandla defended their choice of location, stating, “That place is now a lodge.”
However, Tsvangirai’s son Vincent, who also serves as a Glen View South legislator, expressed shock upon learning of his late father’s mansion being repurposed as a lodge. He admitted that it had been two years since he last visited the property and was unaware of the recent development.
When Tsvangirai married Macheka in 2012, concerns were raised about her connections to ZANU PF due to her father Joseph Macheka’s previous involvement in the ruling party’s Central Committee. The current situation raises questions about the intentions behind housing ZANU PF members within Tsvangirai’s former residence.
