Young Igwe takes new album to SA

In a bid to promote his latest release on foreign territory, Utakataka Express heir, Peter Moyo is billed to perform at the Ekhuruleni Boksburg Hotel Saturday.

Young Igwe has since proved to be a man in his own right if at all having three albums under his belt is anything to go by.

The Lingala titled album Mopao Mokonzi- which translates to big man aims to cement his musical maturity having faced stern challenges and condemnation from music pundits when he assumed the throne.

Matters would turn worse for the youthful musician as a few months later he lost key members namely talented bassist Spencer Khumulani, drummer Guyson Sixpence and chanter Shiga Shiga Katulika- the trio that went on to join Energy Mutodi’s Real Sounds of Africa.

But as fate would have it, all three have since retraced their steps to Utakataka Express and have their fingerprints all over the new project.

After the successful launch of the album at Jazz 24/7 in Harare the musician told Showbiz, upon his arrival in Johannesburg for the weekend gig, that he was excited with the opportunity to dish his new release to his fans in Mzansi.

This he said would be the first regional show to promote and give music followers the best of Utakataka through the new album.

“We want to do as many shows as we can to bring our new album closer to our fans. l thank the organisers of this show for giving us the opportunty to showcase across the border,” said Peter.

He also vowed to strive to keep his late father’s legacy alive by maintaining the standards he set.

The late Moyo was known for producing quality videos and giving top choreographed performances at his live shows.

Said Peter: “As you can see we came very early before the actual date of the show so that we get time as a band to rehearse and familiarise with the stage. We are also going to make sure that sound is done properly to avoid wasting time on unnecessary checks come Saturday. In a nutshell we are ready to go ‘mukuru’ (my brother).”

Dony Nikisi, events manager at the Boksburg Hotel, said they were equally humbled to be hosting Peter at a time he has just released a new album.

He added that preparations were on course as this was their first major show after the winter break.

“We are excited to have young Dhewa at our hotel especially now that we have just finished revamping our VIP and VVIP areas. This will be the third time he performs here and judging from the past two shows we are expecting a good turn-out,” said Nikisi

He said they had roped in Zimdancehall star Tocky Vybes and rasta kwasa crooner Dino Mudondo to support the launch.

Dino said he was honored to be performing in Jozi after a long time.

“I last performed that side way back alongside my best mate Willom Tight. I have good memories and will up my game to make sure l make lasting memories for the fans,” said Dino.

“I have also prepared teasers to my forthcoming album titled Mapfupa angu Amuka due to be released end of this year so that’s something special fans should look foward to.”

He said the show was also special to him as he had shared a close relationship with Tongai Moyo before his death.
