According to Asst Comm Nyathi, the victim and their family had retired for the night on Wednesday, securing all entry points. However, at approximately 2 am, the assailants forcibly gained entry by breaking the main door with iron bars.
“The intruders forcibly entered the premises through the rear door, utilizing iron bars to breach a bedroom door where the victim’s child was sleeping,” detailed Asst Comm Nyathi.
“They seized a mobile device from the initial victim and extorted US$200, proceeding to another bedroom where they confiscated US$600 and R300 from another occupant.”
Subsequently, they targeted the room of the deceased, breaking through the door and engaging in a physical altercation.
Despite resistance, the victim succumbed to the assailants’ assault, suffering fatal blows to the forehead with an iron bar. The perpetrators proceeded to plunder the residence, absconding with R6,500 and three additional mobile phones.
“As they departed the scene, one of the suspects discharged their firearm twice at the victim as they attempted to rise, resulting in their demise,” Asst Comm Nyathi disclosed.
