The two police officers who are accused of killing a pedestrian in Harare after he was struck by a passenger omnibus had to be taken into court yesterday.
They are being accused of murder.
Demitri Chimutanda and Job Mapfumo, two police officers, appeared before Harare magistrate Yeukai Dzuda. They still bear the wounds from the beating they received at the hands of a furious mob who were enraged by their behavior.
Together with the kombi driver Professor Mhandu, the two made their appearance.
The two police officers saw Mhandu driving a commuter omnibus on Friday near the intersection of Highfield Road and Mapuranga, the court was told, and he had parked at an unauthorized location to pick up passengers.
Mhandu sped away when the two policemen approached him and tried to arrest him for picking up and dropping off passengers at an unapproved location, but they were able to catch up with him.
While Chimutanda gripped the wheel, Mhandu allegedly resisted arrest and engaged in physical combat with the police officers.
According to testimony given in court, during the altercation, the car drove off the road and struck Trymore Chinyamakobve, who was tying his shoes by the side of the road.
He passed away instantly.
An enraged mob then attacked the three, beating them severely.
